Sam plummeted/fell/crashed to the ground with a loud/sharp/painful thud/sound/crash.

His New Friend
Sam was having a little sad. He wished to have a new friend to play with. One day, while he was exploring in the woods, he spotted something unusual. It was a little animal with glowing scales. Sam slowly walked over to the creature and said, "Hello! What's your name?" The creature grinned and replied Sam, "You can call me Lily!" And so, Sam made a new friend. They spent the rest of the day laughing together.
Sam was so happy to have found a new friend. He knew that he and Lily would be best friends forever.
